This USMC Remington M40A1 sniper rifle was modified by USMC Marksmanship Training Unit (MTU) snipers c. 1979-83 This rifle is a Remington Model 700 action with a heavy 24-inch barrel, green anodized, Vietnam Redfield 3-9X telescopic sight, large reticle, and camouflaged McMillian fiberglass stock. The jar is unidentified and has a curved rim with a crown. The receiver is cut and hand stamped "USA". Above serial number "221203". This number is on the list of the first Remington M40 rifles purchased by the USMC in 1966. However, the number 221203 is not listed on the list of USMC M40 rifles known in Chandler's "Death From Afar, Volume 1" on page 116. by Chandler. The receiver has a 1980 USMC Unertl scope base with a receiver slide and a second Redfield 1-inch ring engagement block; The top rings are secured with a hex head screw that goes through the bottom of the ring.
